Mr. Kai Ostwald is an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy & Global Affairs and the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He was the director of UBC’s Centre for Southeast Asia Research from 2014-2016. Prior to attaining a PhD from the University of California (San Diego), he spent several years working in the private sector in Southeast Asia. His research focuses broadly on the political economy of the ASEAN region. In addition to this research, he is involved in development projects throughout the region with several partners, including Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the CABC. Prior work for the CABC includes the 2016 Canada-ASEAN Business Outlook report and contributions to the 2017 Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement feasibility study.
