On a regular basis, the CABC provides high-level networking and sector-specific events for its Members.
CABC events are held across ASEAN and in Canada, often as a collaboration with our regional partners and members.
CABC was proud to be a supporting organisation for CanCham Singapore’s Luncheon with the Hon. Frank McKenna which took place on March 19, 2019. CABC Members enjoyed discounted rate for the event.
On March 12, CABC hosted a special breakfast dialogue with the Hon. Jean Charest on Canada’s role and opportunities in ASEAN. This breakfast seminar provided an in-depth look at changing global geopolitical and economic landscapes, and the resulting impact on Canada’s trading future with key partners including Asia and the ASEAN region.

Our distinguished speaker the Hon. Jean Charest is the Honorary Chairman of the Canada-ASEAN Business Council (CABC). Mr. Charest is a Partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, and is the former Premier of Quebec (2003-2012) and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada (1993).

CABC was proud to support the Reform and Modernization of the WTO presentation by Ambassador Stephen de Boer, Canada’s Ambassador to the WTO. The event took place on March 12, 2019, at the SMU School of Law, in Singapore.
Stephen de Boer was appointed as Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization on August 21, 2017. Mr. de Boer joined Global Affairs Canada in 2005. In 2006, he was named the Director of the Softwood Lumber Division. From 2008 to 2010, he served as the Director of the Oceans and Environmental Law Division. In 2010, he joined Environment Canada as the Deputy Chief Negotiator for climate change and the Director General responsible for Canada’s international climate change negotiations and partnerships. Mr. de Boer returned to the department in 2013 as the Director General of the Trade Controls Bureau. In 2015, he was appointed Ambassador to Poland and in 2016, Ambassador to Belarus. Mr. de Boer has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Western University and a Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University.
On February 27, 2019, CABC attended the fourth annual meeting of the Asia Business Leaders Advisory Council 2019 (ABLAC 2019), hosted by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) in Hong Kong.
At the meeting, senior leaders from Canada and Asia discussed Canada’s role and opportunities in Asia given the region’s shifting economic and geopolitical landscape. The meeting provided a unique platform for business and government stakeholders to engage in candid dialogue on how Canada can realize the full potential of its business and economic engagement with Asia. The Council also discussed the strategic alignment of investments and innovations between Canada and Asia and provide strategic policy advice informing the development of an Asia Strategy for the Government of Canada.
As a supporting organization, CABC offered discounted rates to members to attend this Introduction to the CPTPP session by Singapore Business Federation. The session provided participant with a better understanding of the key chapters and important concepts in the CPTPP, and practical insights on how to take advantage of the improved market access offered under the CPTPP, as well as lower business costs when exporting to other CPTPP countries.

On February 19, CABC and our members attended SAL Belt and Road Initiative Series – Overview of BRI fora dialogue with professionals from the International Academy of the Belt and Road, experts in ASEAN/dispute resolution research, active players within the financial industry and a legal practitioner. The session also set the scene for the follow-up seminars on international trade, risk management, dispute resolution and infrastructure, which together encompass the subject-areas and expertise most relevant to navigating the Belt and Road.
