Canada and ASEAN – a Partnership for Growth
Against the backdrop of increasingly complex value chains, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and geopolitical trends, the new economic reality has shaped a winning environment for forward-looking and trade-ready nations. While Canada and ASEAN enjoy a growing relationship – with ongoing exploratory Free Trade Agreement discussions adding momentum to the partnership – now is the time for the regions to leverage one another’s complementary strengths to unlock deeper benefits on both sides of the Pacific. 1. Agriculture

Canada prides itself with its strong agri-food system. The industry’s best practices and well-known reputation for innovative and high-quality agri-food products have consistently positioned Canada as a leading player in the global agricultural trade. Under the backdrop of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) Agreement, Canadian agriculture and agri-food exporters will gain preferential market access and expand their business in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, the ASEAN region supplies a broad range of commodities with a ready market in Canada, and there are lucrative openings for Canadian technology to increase productivity in the ASEAN farm sector.

2. Clean Technology

As the global economy moves toward a greener future, Canadian companies increasingly invest in, create, and adopt innovative and competitive clean technologies within key sectors of the Canadian economy such as energy, mining, forestry, and agriculture. Across the Pacific, ASEAN is also recognizing the importance of sustainability and of developing the renewable energy sector, with several solutions being developed from floating solar farms, mini-hydro projects and rice husks bio-mass plants to more traditional mounted solar farms and in-land wind farms.
